Apple WWDC 2013 News From Day 1

The Apple World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) is in town and some big news is emerging including lots of changes for iOS 7, OS X 10.9 (say goodbye to big cat naming conventions and hello Cali), a new Mac Pro and MacBook Airs with all day battery life (woot!).

Here’s a breakdown of the news:

According to the Cult of Mac, the new iOs 7 is coming this Fall with features including:

• Redesigned interface
• New Lockscreen
• Weather app with interactive displays
• Calendar has new minimalist UI
• Multiple page support in Folders
• Notification Center now available on Lock Screen
• FaceTime audio calls
• Notification syncing
• Phone and Message [glossary_exclude]blocking[/glossary_exclude]
• Activation lock disables phone if stolen

A new Photos app will allows you to collect photos into “Moments” by location, date or people. And, a new interface for Siri with wave animation and Wiki and Bing searches integrated. Plus, much to the chagrin of Pandora, Apple announced iTunes Radio which will launch in the U.S. and be completely ad free for iTunes Match subscribers.

On the OS X front, Apple bid farwell to the naming convention of big cats and will now be California themed with the first being OS X Mavericks after the famous Northern California surf location.

The Cult of Mac also reports these changes for OS X:

• New Finder Tabs
• Tags for files – keep track of files by adding a tag in OS X
• Multiple Displays – much more powerful. Menus and dock appears on both displays.
• OpenGL 4 support
• Time Coalescing – helps improve your CPU efficiency by up to 72%
• 1.5x faster at waking a system from standby
• Accelerated Scrolling optimized for Retina displays
• AppNap – lets you pause apps to prevent battery drain
• Releases Fall 2013

There are also changes to Safari including making it faster, plus a new sidebar with reading list, bookmarks and shared links. You iCloud keychain can now remember your website logins, credit card numbers, etc and can suggest to auto-fill with private info.

For those of you who take your Mac to conferences like WWDC and end up fighting over a plug to charge it, you’ll be pleased to hear, the Mac Book Air (shipping today) now has all-day battery life using Intel’s Haswell processor. And, if you’ve got a Mac desktop, the sleek new Mac Pro design will have you salivating to get your hands on it later this year.
